7. Maritime Finds
During the course of the centuries history has left its mark in the area around Djurhamn. Shards of pottery, everyday things which were thrown overboard in days gone by have floated ashore or fastened in fishing nets. And many is the time boat-owners have sworn when their anchor has been caught up in bits of wreckage. In the 1960s divers from Stockholm’s Scuba Diving Club explored the old harbour bed. They found masses of objects, mainly pottery, but they also found tin and glass artefacts. The oldest find was a small beaker which is probably 15th century. These finds are now housed at the Maritime Museum in Stockholm and the Archipelago Museum in Stavsnäs.Something which is often found on shipwrecks is the Bartman Jug. These stoneware vessels were manufactured in Germany from the end of the 16th century. The origin of the name is German “barbmann” - bearded man – and refers to its relief decoration. To get to the next stop, turn right, walk past the little house on the left, continue up the hill on the left and you’ll see sign number 8. |
