11. Wolves

Wolves were numerous in the archipelago until well into 19th century. Intensive hunting in the later 1800s led to the wolf being practically made extinct. The last two wolves in Stockholm county were shot in 1871. The wolf was declared a protected species in 1966. At that time there were no more than ten of them left in Sweden.
There is no animal in the Swedish fauna as cloaked in myth and as feared as the wolf. It has always awoken strong feelings and many stories, more or less terrifying,have been told about wolves.
Farmers occasionally hunted wolves by order of the king - and there are examples of people trying to drive out wolves using magic spells.
