3. Birds
There are plenty of birds in the forest - black woodpeckers, goldcrests, garden warblers, robins, jays, lesser-spotted woodpeckers, willow warblers, nuthatches, blue tits and wrens. Herons nest in the old pine trees here and can often be heard.
The nuthatch is a speedy little bird, always on the move collecting seeds. It’s often to be seen climbing head first down the trunk of a tree hiding its seeds in cracks in the bark.
The heron builds its nest high up in the treetops. It’s a big bird with a hoarse, hooting call. It can live to be as much as twenty years old and returns to its nest year after year.
The blue tit is one of our commonest birds, and has increased in number in recent years. Despite its pretty appearance the blue tit is a tough little bird who doesn’t think twice about fighting other birds for food.
Follow the path up into the woods and you’ll come to stop number 4. If you’d rather follow the road you’ll find an exact duplicate of sign number four after the bend in the road.
